| Spanish abstract | John Burdon Sanderson Haldane fue uno de los personajes más pícaros de la ciencia independiente; desvergonzado, brillante, divertido y totalmente singular. Hijo de un profesor de fisiología de Oxford, comenzó en la ciencia como ayudante de su padre. Fue profesor de genética y biometría en el University College de Londres, donde ayudó a crear la moderna teoría sintética de la evolución. Sobre el tamaño correcto se publicó originalmente en 1928, y en español en la Gaceta ecológica del INE en 2002, se reproduce aquí por considerarlo un clásico, un texto, dice Borges, que una nación o un grupo de naciones a lo largo del tiempo han decidido leer como si en sus páginas todo fuera deliberado, fatal, profundo como el cosmos y capaz de interpretaciones sin término |
| English abstract | J.B.S. Haldane was one of the great rascals of science— independent, nasty, brilliant, funny and totally one of a kind. Son of an Oxford professor of physiology, he began in science as his father’s assistant. Eventually he taught genetics and biometry at University College, London, where he helped create the modern Synthetic Theory of evolution. This essay was originally published in 1928 and in spanish in the Gaceta ecológica of the INE in 2002,. It is reproduced here because it is considered a classic as Borges defines it: a text that a nation or group of nations over time have decided to read on your pages as if everything were deliberate, fatal, deep as the cosmos and capable of endless interpretations |
