| Resumen en español | El objetivo del artículo es identificar y jerarquizar las variables causales del crecimiento del tamaño del Estado a partir de los principales enfoques teóricos del tema. El método de investigación se conforma por un análisis de frecuencia de las aportaciones de los autores más preponderantes en la cuestión y por la estimación del algoritmo de Saaty. Los resultados muestran que las variables que afectan el tamaño del Estado son los ingresos de la población, las demandas específicas de ésta, y la productividad de las organizaciones estatales. La primera variable tiene una relevancia en la literatura de 37.90%, la segunda de 20.70% y la tercera de 41.40%. La limitación del estudio está en el periodo de las publicaciones analizadas (1950 a 2010). La originalidad del artículo se halla en las técnicas de investigación y en los vínculos establecidos entre las contribuciones de los autores. En los hallazgos sobresale que algunos enfoques manejan indistintamente categorías y variables. No colocar a las variables en el centro del diseño causal de las políticas que buscan mejorar la operación del Estado puede producir efectos no esperados |
| Resumen en inglés | The objective is to identify and hierarchize the causal variables of the growth of the size of the State taking into account the main theoretical approaches of the subject. The research method considers a frequency analysis of the contributions of the most important authors and the estimation of Saaty's algorithm. The results show that the variables that affect the size of the State are the income of the population, the specific demands of the population, and the productivity of state organizations. The first variable has a relevance in the literature of 37.90%, the second of 20.70% and the third of 41.40%. The limitation of the study is in the period of the publications analyzed (1950 to 2010). The originality of the article lies in the research techniques and the links established between the contributions of the authors. In the findings it stands out that some approaches handle categories and variables indistinctly. Not placing variables at the center of the causal design of policies that seek to improve the operation of the State can produce unexpected effects |
