| Spanish abstract | En este artículo se estudia la noción de martirio como narrativa y se enfatiza la importancia de las causas sociales que los mártires preconizan como requisito para estudiarlos desde una perspectiva sociológica e histórica. En este tenor, el martirio es interpretado como un espacio de identificación entre las esferas religiosa y política que desafía las distinciones tradicionales del pensamiento político moderno. El martirio es analizado como un fenómeno que pone al descubierto la maleabilidad de las creencias y prácticas religiosas modernas y que permite identificar transformaciones sociopolíticas en los grupos que abanderan la causa del mártir. Es la filiación del mártir la que proporciona pautas para su estudio, antes que las narrativas hagiográficas o cuasi hagiográficas escritas tras la muerte. Estos textos resultan útiles exclusivamente cuando se estudian militancias y sucesos históricos específicos que tienden a modificar las narrativas mismas y transformar el sentido adscrito al deceso trágico del mártir. La construcción y reconstrucción hagiográficas brindan un espacio epistemológico importante para estudiar las intersecciones entre política y religión en el mundo moderno y contemporáneo |
| English abstract | The paper aims at interpreting martyrdom as a narrative and as a heuristic device. It underlines the importance of acknowledging the social causes martyrs stood for and stresses the significance of activism and militancy to create and promote martyrial figures. Martyrdom is thus interpreted as an epistemological space where the political and the religious spheres converge to challenge many of the usual distinctions that shape modern political thinking.Moreover, the study of modern martyrs shows the malleability of religious beliefs and practices and can be used as an avenue to track down sociopolitical change and to help to explain social mobilization patterns. Martyrial narratives are useful to this purpose when studied in light of specific historical developments and activism. These tend to modify the narratives themselves and to change the meaning assigned to the martyr´s death |
