| English abstract | The archives of the universities have in their care essential documents created in the course of teaching, research and extension. These documents are witness to the memory of the institution and may be a research resource for students, teachers, historians, researchers, and others. In this sense, the archive is custodian of the university institutional memory. This article aims to reflect on the archives of Brazilian universities and their role in the preservation of documentary heritage and promoting the memory of the institution. | Portuguese abstract | Os arquivos das universidades têm sob sua guarda documentos essenciais criados no decorrer das atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão. Esses documentos são testemunho da memória da instituição, podendo ser fonte de pesquisa para alunos, professores, historiadores, pesquisadores, entre outros. Neste sentido, o arquivo universitário é custodiador da memória institucional. Este artigo procura fazer uma reflexão sobre os arquivos das universidades brasileiras e a sua função na de preservação do patrimônio documental e promoção da memória da instituição.
