| English abstract | This paper describes a series of steps that turn thoughts into language, speech, and recorded information, being this last regarded as the focus of the information science. Considering that technological advances have nowadays determined relevant changes in the organization, management and dissemination of the information, the professional profile of librarians is analyzed here, considering their new and multiple skills and competencies, as well as the needs of interdisciplinary work. Within this context, the historical background and new concept of library are focused. Considering the necessary complementary characteristics of information and reading, it is noticed that the major challenge for the contemporary libraries is of being a place where the access to information and the reading habits converge |
| Portuguese abstract | Descreve-se nesse trabalho a seqüência de etapas que transformam o pensamento em linguagem, discurso e informação registrada, entendida esta como objeto de interesse da ciência da informação. Considerando-se que nos dias atuais os avanços da tecnologia determinam importantes mudanças na organização, gerência e disseminação da informação, analisa-se o perfil do bibliotecário, em suas novas e múltiplas competências e habilitações profissionais, bem como a necessidade de atuação interdisciplinar. Nesse contexto, aborda-se a evolução histórica e o novo conceito de biblioteca. Em função da necessária complementaridade entre informação e leitura, constata-se que o grande desafio da biblioteca contemporânea é o de se converter no espaço de convergência entre o acesso à informação e o hábito de leitura |
