| English abstract | This work aims at answering the following question: “What are the novel’s possibilities today, in these times of immaterial ‘bits’ and digital culture?”To do so, it makes use of a doublecritical strategy: on the one hand,it examinessome answersproposed byliterary critics; on the other, it examines some of Enrique Vila-Matas’ novels, notably Montano’s malady(2002), Never any end to Paris(2003), and Dublinesque(2010), which are immanently considered. In this tense analytic movement, which may recall the construction of a (weak) constellation, the answers provided by critics are confronted with the actual experience of literary construction and the universe of such novels, always in the hope that such a contrast may reveal the dilemmas and problems currently faced by the literary production. Along the way, a complementary but necessary goal emerges: to identify and interpret the various literary modes and procedures these novels resort to in order to draw on their fragile bodies a specifically literary concept about their objective situation in a world that is down right hostile to them. In this perspective, the subject of the deathof literature, comprising different nuances and occupying the foreground, can be interpreted as a social determination to produce the current literary creation, although exploring it so ironically; or rather, as away of building a kind of literary resistance to the competition imposed by the new means of expression coming from sophisticated technological devices for the productionand distribution of images and sounds, a fact that objectively and constantly restrict sreadership. The conclusion,equally not devoid of some irony, points toa freak and anachronistic fact: in today’s society, some dead enjoy good health |
| Portuguese abstract | Este trabalho pretende responder à indagação “O que pode o romance hoje, na época dos “bits”imateriais e da cultura digital?” Para tanto, lança mão de dupla estratégia crítica: por um lado, examina algumas respostas a ela propostas por críticos literários; por outro, examina alguns romances de Enrique Vila-Matas, notadamenteO mal de Montano (2002), Paris não tem fim(2003) e Dublinesca(2010), que são considerados de modo imanente. Nesse tenso movimento analítico, que pode recordar a construção de uma (frágil) constelação, as respostas fornecidas pelos críticos são confrontadas com a experiência atual da construção literária e com o universo de tais romances, sempre com a esperança de que tal contraste seja capaz de revelar os impasses e problemas enfrentados atualmente pela criação literária. Nesse percurso, desponta ainda umobjetivo complementar, mas necessário: o deidentificar e interpretar os diversosmodos e procedimentos literáriosa que esses romancesrecorrem a fim de elaborarem, em seus frágeis corpos, uma concepção literária sobre sua situação objetiva em um mundo que lhes é francamente hostil. Nessa perspectiva, o tema da morte da literatura, que comporta diferentes nuances e ocupa o primeiro plano, pode ser interpretado como uma determinação social para a criação literária atual, ainda que esta o explore de modo irônico; ou antes, como maneira de construir uma forma de resistência literária à concorrência que os novos meios expressivos oriundos de sofisticados aparelhos tecnológicos de produção e distribuição de sons e imagens impõem a ela, fato que restringe objetiva e constantemente o públicoleitor. A conclusão, também não sem alguma ironia, aponta para um fato esdrúxulo e anacrônico: na sociedade atual, “certos mortos gozam de boa saúde” |
