| English abstract | This paper, based on Origen’s reading of the New Testament, especially the letter of Paul to the Romans 13.1 and Matthew 22.21, shows how Origen, considered to have been apolitical, dealt with the limits of the submission of the soul to earthly authorities – a submission that is necessary as long as history continues and the cosmic battle between Christ and the devil has not ceased. This reading of Origen was taken up by Ambrose and then re-proposed in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance by thinkers such as Marsilius of Padua, Erasmus and Melanchthon. Moreover, the reading of Origen influenced the representation in iconography of the saying: "give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s" |
| Portuguese abstract | O texto procura mostrar como Orígenes, tido como apolítico, a partir de sua leitura do Novo Testamento e especialmente das cartas de Paulo aos Romanos 13,1 e de Mateus 22,21, trata dos limites da submissão da alma às autoridades terrenas, algo necessário enquanto não se dá o fim da história, quando cessará o combate cósmico entre Cristo e o diabo. Essa leitura de Orígenes foi retomada por Ambrósio e depois reproposta na Idade Média e no Renascimento por pensadores como Marsílio de Pádua, Erasmo e Melanchton. Ademais, a leitura de Orígenes influenciou a iconografia representativa do dito "dai a César o que é de César e a Deus o que é de Deus" |
