| English abstract | Jean-Baptiste Debret, a Parisian painter, is one of the most important and known European artists who have been to Brazil in the first half of the 19th century. He stayed in the country from 1816 to 1831 and produced a rich iconographic collection of American subjects, which mainly portrayed popular themes, which was partially published in the monumental Viagem pitoresca e histórica ao Brasil (“Picturesque and Historic Travel to Brazil”) (Paris, 1834-1839). Such a work contributed decisively to the construction of an imaginary of the Brazilian past. However, in his French work prior to the Brazilian experience, the author had already manifested the interest in costumes motifs, namely in the series of engravings dedicated to Italian types. Thereby, the study of Debret’s only passage through Italy, together with his mentor Jacques-Louis David, is indispensable to a more extensive comprehension of his work in Brazil |
| Portuguese abstract | Jean-Baptiste Debret foi um dos mais importantes e conhecidos artistas europeus que estiveram no Brasil na primeira metade do século XIX. No período em que permaneceu no país, de 1816 a 1831, o pintor parisiense produziu um rico acervo iconográfico de assuntos americanos, retratando em especial os temas populares, e que foi parcialmente publicado no monumental Viagem pitoresca e histórica ao Brasil (Paris, 1834-1839), obra que contribuiu decisivamente para a construção do imaginário do passado brasileiro. Contudo, em seu trabalho francês anterior verificamos que o autor já havia manifestado interesse por motivos de costumes, nomeadamente na série de estampas dedicada aos tipos italianos. Desse modo, o estudo da única passagem de Debret por esse país europeu, ao lado do mestre Jacques-Louis David, torna-se imprescindível para a compreensão mais abrangente de sua obra brasileira |
