| English abstract | The Brazilian-based Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) is one of the most rapidly growing denominations in the early twenty-first century. Like most of the fast-growing mega-churches denominations the IURD is Pentecostal in its beliefs and practice and innovative in its liturgy, utilizing contemporary praise music, highly participatory worship, and it aggressively incorporates modern marketing techniques in evangelization. This is a modern-day variation of Pentecostalism that stresses miraculous transformation of life, in terms not only of spirit and body, but sometimes even of lifestyle and patterns of consumption (prosperity theology). The IURD speaks to the material wants and needs of people living world in which success is measured almost exclusively by affluence and consumption, where sin and grace are defined, respectively, by poverty and wealth. This paper will explore roots North American roots of prosperity theology and examine its expansion through the lens of the IURD and other Latin American “health and wealth churches.” It suggests that the current popularity of prosperity theology is partial response to the challenges of neo-liberal economic policies and the pressures of the global economy |
| Portuguese abstract | A Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) é uma das denominações que crescem mais rapidamente no início do século XXI. Tal como a maioria das megaigrejas que crescem dessa forma, a IURD é pentecostal em suas crenças e práticas e inovadora em sua liturgia, utilizando música de louvor contemporânea, culto de adoração altamente participativo, incorporando agressivamente técnicas de marketing modernas na evangelização. É uma variação moderna do pentecostalismo, enfatizando a transformação miraculosa da vida, em termos de corpo, espírito, estilo de vida e padrões de consumo (teologia da prosperidade). A IURD dirige-se aos desejos e necessidades materiais das pessoas que vivem em um mundo onde o sucesso é medido quase que exclusivamente pela riqueza e pelo consumo, onde o pecado e a graça são definidos, respectivamente, pela pobreza e pela fortuna. Esse texto explorará as raízes norte-americanas da teologia da prosperidade e examinará sua expansão por meio da IURD e de outras igrejas do “evangelho da riqueza e da saúde”. O texto sugere que a popularidade atual da teologia da prosperidade é uma resposta parcial aos desafios de políticas econômicas neoliberais e das pressões da economia global |
