| Spanish abstract | El presente artículo presenta, en primera instancia, el campo de estudio de la cultura material en sentido amplio, incorporando en él la interacción mutua entre la sociedad y los objetos materiales. Por otra parte, se describe el mobiliario doméstico en la ciudad argentina de Córdoba a fines del siglo XVIII, en particular de tres espacios cotidianos significativos: la sala, el estrado y la alcoba. Finalmente, se analizan los significados de los diferentes muebles y las prácticas sociales asociadas a ellos. A partir del análisis de las distintas fuentes se pretende demostrar que los diversos grupos de objetos trabajados no solo producían efectos físicos, también comunicaban o expresaban, por ejemplo, status social y económico y diferencias de género |
| English abstract | This article begins by introducing the field of material culture studies and the way it incorporates the mutual interaction between society and material objects. It then describes household furniture in the Argentine city of Cordoba in the late-eighteenth century, paying particular attention to three important spaces of daily life: the living room, the drawing room, and the bedroom. Lastly, it analyzes the meanings of different pieces of furniture and the social practices associated with them. By analyzing different sources, the aim is to show that the various kinds of objects studied not only produced physical effects but also communicated or expressed other attributes such as social and economic status or gender differences |
