| Spanish abstract | El propósito central del artículo es explicar el papel determinante que los municipios jugaron en el mundo hispanoamericano a lo largo del siglo XIX. Aunque en estos últimos años la historiografía ha insistido, con razón, en la importancia del primer régimen liberal español, sin el análisis de unas claves firmemente arraigadas en las creencias y el discurso que estructuraban el orden político de antiguo régimen, no es posible entender el protagonismo de los municipios en la época de la independencia. Estos valores remiten a una cultura jurídica, común a todo el mundo hispánico, en la que la transición de un modelo jurisprudencial de administración de la justicia en uno sometido a la ley será muy larga y compleja |
| English abstract | The main goal of this article is to explain the central role that municipalities played in the Hispano-American world throughout the nineteenth century. Although in recent years the importance of the first Spanish liberal regime has rightly been stressed in the historiography, it is not possible to understand the important part played by municipalities in the era of Independence without analyzing some clues firmly rooted in the beliefs and discourse that structured the political order of the ancien régime. These values stem from a legal culture, common to the whole Hispanic world, in which the transition from a jurisprudential model of the administration of justice to a one based on the rule of law would be very long and complex |
