| Spanish abstract | El camino de las mujeres en medicina ha sido complicado. Fue hasta 1849 que la Dra. Isabel Blackwell se convirtió en la primera mujer que ejerció como médico en el mundo. La Dra. Diana Beck fue la primera neurocirujana reconocida. En Latinoamérica, fue María Cristina García Sancho y Álvarez-Tostado. Todas tuvieron que enfrentar serios obstáculos; sin embargo, esta situación ha cambiado paulatinamente. Ana Lilia Siordia Karam fue la primera mujer neurocirujana en graduarse del INNN. Pasaron 19 años para que se graduara la segunda neurocirujana: la Dra. María Petra Herrera Guerrero. Durante su estancia como residentes refieren haber tenido dificultad en el plano de relaciones interpersonales, laborales y sociales con sus compañeros. Actualmente, cuatro de los 25 (16%) residentes de neurocirugía en el INNN son mujeres, y aunque algunas todavía vivieron experiencias difíciles relacionadas con la discriminación de género, la situación general ha cambiado. Con trabajo y respeto, las mujeres han logrado tener cada vez mayor presencia dentro del campo médico-quirúrgico. Esperamos que en un futuro cercano se logre un ambiente de equidad de género y combate a la discriminación en el campo de la medicina y todas sus especialidades |
| English abstract | Women have always had a hard time in the history of medicine; Dr. Isabel Blackwell was the first woman in history to practice medicine. Dr. Diana Beck became the world´s first female neurosurgeon. The first Latin American female neurosurgeon was Dr. María Cristina García Sancho y Álvarez-Tostado. All of these women had to face a large number of social, cultural, and economic obstacles in their path; however, this situation has changed gradually. Dr. Ana Lilia Siordia Karam was the first neurosurgeon to graduate from INNN. Nineteen years later the second female neurosurgeon at this institute was Dr. María Petra Herrera Guerrero. During their time at this institute they endured a lot of difficulties, especially with most of their coworkers; however, some coworkers treated them with respect and no gender distinction. Nowadays, four of the 25 total neurosurgery residents at INNN are women, and even though some of them have had to endure acts of gender discrimination, the general situation has changed. With work and respect, women have managed to have a larger role in the surgical field. We hope that in the near future a gender discrimination-free environment will be achieved in medicine and its specialties |
