| Spanish abstract | En este artículo se plantea la necesidad de comprender las ideas que los protestantes tuvieron acerca de la mujer, los fundamentos de dichos conceptos y el espacio que les concedieron dentro del proyecto misionero. Por otro lado, nos interesa captar las miradas que ellas desarrollaron de sí mismas y las reformas que impulsaron en la sociedad. Partiendo de una posición "ambivalente" el protestantismo marcado por los revival religiosos redundaron en una apertura para la participación y reconocimiento de la mujer. Ya en el contexto rioplatense (Buenos Aires, Rosario, Montevideo), el protestantismo inicialmente sostuvo una concepción tradicional y patriarcal de los roles femeninos, que sería desafiada por las misioneras provenientes de los Estados Unidos. Estas impulsaron un modelo de mujer que buscaba flexibilizar la idea patriarcal y favorecieron la modernización de la sociedad latinoamericana a través del impulso de instituciones, sobre todo educativas, que propiciaban la participación de las mujeres protestantes en la sociedad civil |
| English abstract | In this essay, it is necessary to understand and comprehend the ideas that Protestants had about women, the reasons for these ideas, and the space given to women within the missionary project. On the other hand, our interest is in capturing the insights they developed about themselves and the reformations they promoted in society. From an ambivalent position, the Protestantism marked by the religious revivalists meant an opening for women's participation and recognition. In the context of the Rio de la Plata (Buenos Aires, Rosario, Montevideo), Protestantism initially held a traditional and patriarchal concept of the female roles which was to be challenged by missionary women who came from the United States. They impelled a model for women that sought to make more flexible the patriarchal ideas and favoured modernization of Latin American society through the foundation of institutions -especially educational ones- which favoured the participation of Protestant women in the civil society |
