| English abstract | There is an important division between interpreters of biological function that distinguishes teleological from non-teleological interpretations. Both interpretations assign an important explanatory role for the concept of function. However, while the former maintains that the function explains why certain trait, body or property exists, the second claims that the explanatory role of the concept of function is determinate by its contribution to the system and that the information about its origin is not relevant. In this paper, I develop a teleological conception of the concept of biological function, addressing some of the main discussions on this subject in order to understand the scope of its explanation |
| Portuguese abstract | Há uma divisão fundamental na concepção de função biológica que distingue as interpretações teleológicas das não-teleológicas. As duas interpretações defendem a existência de uma importante força explanatória do conceito de função para a biologia, porém, de forma bem diferente. Enquanto a primeira sustenta que a função explica por que certo traço, órgão ou propriedade existe, a segunda considera que o poder explicativo da função está na avaliação de sua contribuição para o sistema do qual faz parte, não sendo relevante para sua compreensão a informação sobre sua origem. Nesse trabalho, desenvolvo a concepção teleológica do conceito de função biológica, abordando algumas das discussões sobre esse tema a fim de compreender o alcance de sua explicação |
