| Resumen en inglés | The purpose of this article is to investigate the statements and reasoning of mission historian Gustav Warneck regarding the Reformers’ commitment to the propagation of the gospel to all the nations. It deals mainly with Warneck’s spiritual and academic formation, his two most influential missiological li - terary works, his general arguments against the Reformers, and his excuses for the “silence” of the Reformers concerning missions. A second article will continue the discussion highlighting Warneck’s arguments against the apparent silence of the Reformers and analyzing the main arguments of other mission historians (Kenneth S. Latourette, Stephen C. Neill, Herbert J. Kane, Ralph Winter, and Ruth Tucker), calling attention to their own silence regarding necessary documentation to support their claims against the Reformers. The research considers aspects of the life and work of these historians relevant to the subject and analyzes what each of them has written about the Reformers and missions. This includes sources they have used, how they have accessed and evaluated them to arrive at their statements concerning the Reformers, why they used those sources, and how their presupposed definition of terms affected their choices and interpretation of sources in their writings on the Reformers and missions. The articles will also consider what the historians have in common, how they relate to each other, the strengths and weaknesses of their works, who started the anti-Reformed academic argument concerning the Reformers and missions and their immediate successors, and finally whether or not those historians were correct in their use and interpretation (hermeneutics and exe - gesis) of the sources |
| Resumen en portugués | O propósito deste artigo é investigar as declarações e argumentação do historiador de missões Gustav Warneck acerca do compromisso dos refor - madores com a propagação do evangelho a todas as nações. O texto aborda principalmente a formação espiritual e acadêmica de Warneck, suas duas obras missiológicas mais influentes, seus argumentos gerais contra os reformadores e suas justificativas para o “silêncio” dos reformadores a respeito de missões. Um segundo artigo irá dar continuidade a essa análise destacando os argumentos de Warneck contra o aparente silêncio dos reformadores e analisando os principais argumentos de outros historiadores de missões (Kenneth S. Latourette, Stephen C. Neill, Herbert J. Kane, Ralph Winter e Ruth Tucker), chamando a atenção para o seu próprio silêncio acerca da necessária documentação em apoio a suas afirmações contra os reformadores. A pesquisa considera aspectos da vida e obra desses historiadores que são relevantes ao assunto e analisa o que cada um deles escreveu sobre os reformadores e missões. Isso inclui fontes que eles utilizaram, como eles as acessaram e avaliaram para chegar às suas decla - rações a respeito dos reformadores, por que eles usaram essas fontes e como sua pressuposta definição de termos afetou suas escolhas e interpretação das fontes em seus escritos sobre os reformadores e missões. Os artigos também irão considerar o que os historiadores têm em comum, como se relacionam uns com os outros, os pontos fortes e fracos de suas obras, quem iniciou o ar - gumento acadêmico antirreformado acerca dos reformadores e missões e seus sucessores imediatos, e finalmente se esses historiadores estavam corretos ou não em seu uso e interpretação (hermenêutica e exegese) das fontes |
