| English abstract | The Protestant Reformation happened in the wake of the invention of the printing press and the huge editorial output that was brought about by this technological breakthrough. The reformers managed to utilize this effective tool in order to spread their ideas among their coreligionists and the wider public. Their example created a tradition of emphasis on literature that was transmitted to their successors. Influenced by this mindset, Brazilian Presbyterians since the beginning invested in the publication of literature as a means to spread their movement and press home their proposals. This article seeks to present an overview of the literary output of this group in Brazil, in three general areas: newspapers, magazines, and books. The article concludes with an analysis of the significance, limitations, and possibilities of this effort |
| Portuguese abstract | A Reforma Protestante ocorreu na esteira da invenção da imprensa e da enorme produção editorial suscitada por esse avanço tecnológico. Os reformadores souberam utilizar esse meio eficaz para divulgar suas idéias junto aos seus correligionários e ao público mais amplo. Seu exemplo criou uma tradição de valorização da literatura que se transmitiu aos seus sucessores. Os presbiterianos brasileiros, influenciados por essa mentalidade, investiram desde o início na publicação de literatura como um meio de divulgação do seu movimento e fixação das suas propostas. Este artigo procura traçar um panorama da produção literária desse grupo no Brasil, subdividindo-a em três áreas gerais: jornais, revistas e livros.
