English abstract The French journalist and correspondent, Max Leclerc, was sent to Brazil in 1889, by Journal de Débats, from Paris, which, with Le Temps and Le Figaro, were one of the most influential newspaper in France. Leclerc didn’t only send detailed reports about the political situation to France, but also about the economic outlook of French investment in Brazil, and he transformed his texts in excellent material about Brazilian life in the late nineteenth century. His articles collection, sent to Paris between 1889 December and last 1890 January, time he remained in the country, resulted in the publication of the book Lettres du Brésil (Letters from Brazil). This article focuses its analysis in the two last chapters, in the author’s observations and representations of the “public spirit” and national identity, and briefly, in its remarks on French investment prospects effective and safe in the country. No aim of this study is to reveal whether the foreign traveller’s observations are accurate, but to understand the meanings of the words emanating from his discursive construction of Brazil
