| Resumen en inglés | Self-medication is a common form of auto-attention to health, consisting of the drug consumption independently of the professional prescription. Some economical, political and cultural factors have been contributing to the growth and diffusion of this practice in the world, becoming a problem of public health. The present paper aims at analyzing the medicines search of employees of a footwear industry, in Vale do Rio dos Sinos. A descriptive and cross sectional study has been conducted, with a quantitative approach. Registers of medicines request had been raised, in the first-aid room of the company, from April to September, 2006. There were 529 medicines solicitations, and in 93% of the cases, without medical prescription. The most used drug was paracetamol, totalizing 29% of the requests, and the workers that most appealed to the first-aid room were from the sewing section, with 54.4% of the registers. Among the most frequent complaints, the headache had been related in 44.6 % of the cases |
