| English abstract | If eroticism, as Bataille states, distinguishes human sexuality - as it institutes the modern subject as the effect of desire - it belongs in critical analyses of the conditions of production of modern subjects. For this reason, in this paper, I revisit articulations of the erotic in Freyre's version of the Brazilian national subject. I trace how eroticism produces a racial figure, the mestiço, whose particularity resides in that it is an eschatological object, i.e. a historical figure destined to disappear. While this figure has been celebrated as the unifying, productive symbol of Brazilianness, it has opposite material effects. As a political/symbolic device, the mestiço institutes subaltern social subjects. This results from how miscegenation, as a historical signifier, anticipates the (physical and symbolic) obliteration of blacks and Indians. This, I show, results from the construction of the nonwhite female as an instrument (not as an object) of colonial desire. As such, it is also presupposed in the mechanisms of racial subject governing contemporary Brazil |
| Portuguese abstract | Se o erotismo, como afirma Bataille, diferencia a sexualidade humana - conforme institui o sujeito moderno como efeito do desejo - está corretamente classificado entre as análises críticas das condições de produção dos sujeitos modernos. Por isso, neste artigo, revisito as articulações do erótico na versão de Freyre do sujeito nacional brasileiro. Mapeio como o erotismo produz uma figura racial, o mestiço, cuja particularidade reside em ser um objeto escatológico, isto é, uma figura histórica destinada a desaparecer. Enquanto essa figura tem sido celebrada como o símbolo produtivo e unificador da brasilidade, tem efeitos materiais opostos. Como dispositivo político/simbólico, o mestiço institui sujeitos sociais subalternos. Isso é conseqüência de como a miscigenação, como significante histórico, antecipa a obliteração (física e simbólica) de negros e índios. Isso é resultado, como mostro, da construção da mulher não branca como um instrumento (não como objeto) do desejo colonial. Como tal, isso também está pressuposto dentro dos mecanismos do sujeito racial que prevalece no Brasil contemporâneo |
