| English abstract | Aging has been the subject of many studies since the significant increase in the ratio of elderly people in a worldwide perspective. From the historicalcultural perspective, the research aimed to understand from interviews with four elderly between 75 and 95 years, living in a long-term institution, the meaning given to the aging process itself and the meanings attributed to family in their process of formation and maintenance. The results showed that the significance of the aging process is subject to every life story, regardless of the age or health status of each elderly. In the view of the interviewees, the modern family today has transformed both its structure and their relationships, yet the family life of the elderly and their contact with their family group appears as a privileged form of the elders' relationship with the world, in multiple ways of building himself as a member in the social world |
| Portuguese abstract | O envelhecimento tem sido objeto de muitas pesquisas visto o significativo aumento do quociente de idosos numa perspectiva mundial. O artigo apresenta pesquisa que buscou compreender, à luz da perspectiva históricocultural, a significação dada ao envelhecimento e os sentidos atribuídos à família em seu processo de constituição e manutenção. Para tal, foram realizadas quatro entrevistas, com idosos entre 75 e 95 anos, que vivem em instituição de longa permanência. Os resultados indicaram que a significação do envelhecimento é subjetivada em cada história de vida, independentemente da idade ou estado de saúde do idoso. Na visão dos entrevistados, a família moderna atual tem se transformado tanto em sua estrutura como em suas relações, contudo, a convivência familiar e a vinculação do idoso ao seu grupo familiar aparecem como uma das formas privilegiadas do idoso se relacionar com o mundo, nas múltiplas formas de se construir como homem no mundo social |
