| English abstract | This paper aims at investigating racial insults as a means of building a stigmatized social identity. With that in mind the author uses complaints filed with the São Paulo Racial Crime Police Headquarters as a source for analyzing stereotypes that are socially accepted by both victims and police officers. The author argues that the function of racial insults is to instate people as racially inferior, and that such attacks can not only symbolically direct those who are discriminated against toward their historically constituted status as inferiors but also reinstate that status |
| Portuguese abstract | O objetivo do artigo é investigar o insulto racial, como forma de construção de uma identidade social estigmatizada. Para tanto, o autor toma como fonte as queixas registradas na Delegacia de Crimes Raciais de São Paulo entre maio de 1997 e abril de 1998 procurando analisar os estereótipos socialmente aceitos, tanto pelas vítimas quanto pelos policiais. O autor argumenta que a função do insulto racial é institucionalizar um inferior racial, sendo capaz não só de simbolicamente dirigir a pessoa discriminada a seu lugar inferior historicamente constituído, como também de reinstituir esse lugar |
