| Spanish abstract | La modernidad prometió una sociedad abierta con autodeterminación y libertad; ella, sin embargo, está plagada de fuerzas que ni controla ni comprende suficientemente porque también se define como ´sociedad de miedos´. ¿Cómo los seres humanos pueden hacer compatibles felicidad y miedos individuales y colectivos? El texto hace un barrido por la literatura especializada y por datos provenientes de estudios empíricos para encontrar respuestas a la pregunta central en la cual se devela el fantasma que recorre el espacio latinoamericano. Tres respuestas se desarrollan en el texto: a) miedos y felicidad coinciden en una misma población y en un mismo tiempo; b) miedos y felicidad conviven en un mismo grupo social y en un mismoespacio socio-geográfico; y c) los seres humanos desarrollanmecanismos individuales y colectivos para soportar, priorizar o alternar su existencia ante la presencia de felicidad y miedos |
| English abstract | Modernity promised an open society with self-determination and freedom, yet contemporary society is plagued with forces it neither controls nor comprehends enough because it is also defined as the “society of fears.” How can human beings make individual and collective happiness and fears compatible? The study scans through the specialized literature and data from empirical studies to answer the central question that unveils the phantom haunting Latin American space. Three answers are developed in the text: a) fears and happiness coincide in the same population at the same time; b) fears and happiness coexist in the same social group and socio-geographic space; and c) human beings develop individual and collective mechanisms to deal with, prioritize or alternate their existence when faced with happiness and fears |
