| Spanish abstract | Las creencias religiosas en el México contemporáneo son una síntesis de sistemas culturales opuestos, la religión mesoamericana y el cristianismo. En su convivencia, las creencias han fusionado dogmas y fundamentos teológicos, y sus personajes divinos actuales –santos, vírgenes, Cristo– muestran rostros de deidades prehispánicas y esferas de acción sagrada novedosas. Presentamos el análisis de un santo exaltado como guerrero y auxiliar en la contienda militar, se trata de Santiago Apóstol, cuyas nuevas acciones giran alrededor del cuidado del ciclo reproductivo del maíz y la fertilidad de los campos. Las sanciones del santo se inscriben en el terreno de la magia. Además, el santo y su corcel cobran vida para trotar por los caminos de Cholula, y retornan al templo sucios, con tierra y zacate como prueba de sus andanzas nocturnas |
| English abstract | The religious beliefs in contemporary Mexico constitute a synthesis of two opposite cultural systems: Mesoamerican religion and Christianity. During their coexistence, both beliefs had fused together dogmas and theological foundations and their contemporary divine protagonists (saints, virgins, Christ) show faces of old prehispanic deities and novel spheres of sacred action. We present an analysis of stories of a saint exalted as a warrior and auxiliary in military conflict: Saint James the Apostle whose new actions have to do with the care of the reproductive cycle of maize and the fertility of the fields. The sanctions of the saint are inscribed in the field of metaphoric and metonymic magic. Besides, the saint and his steed come alive to trot around the fields of Cholula and return to the temple apparently stained with dirt and hay as proof of their nocturnal wanderings |
| Other abstract | Die religiösen Glaubensvorstellungen im zeitgenössischen Mexiko bilden eine Synthese von zwei gegensätzlichen kulturellen Systemen: die mesoamerikanische Religion und das Christentum. Während ihrer Koexistenz sind theologische Dogmen und Grundlagen beider Glaubenssysteme miteinander verschmolzen, und ihre heiligen Figuren der Gegenwart – Heilige, Jungfrauen, Christus – weisen Züge alter prähispanischer Göttlichkeiten und neuartige Sphären sakraler Handlung auf. In diesem Artikel analysieren wir Erzählungen über einen Heiligen, der als Krieger und Helfer bei militärischen Auseinandersetzungen gepriesen wird; es handelt sich um den Apostel Jakobus, dessen neues Betätigungsfeld in der Überwachung des Repoduktionszyklus des Maises und der Fruchtbarkeit der Felder liegt.
