English abstract | In this essay questions of Otherness and the Same in the Afroam eri - can context during 16 and 17th centuries are studied. These problems are related to Cultural Studies and are concrete in Toni Morrison’s (Nobel Lit - erature Prize 1993) fiction. A socio-literary analysis of A Mercy (2008) is pro - duced through close reading and a comparative perspective. Florens’s story, the initiation character of this novel, allows to create a complex ethical di - mension of the historical-democratic experiment in a pluricultural society. The Afroamerican subject definition is taken apart from its ethnic origin till a resignification of the value given to the identitarian elements that conform a culture —in this particular case, the American one— is achieved. In this eth - ics of identity and differentiation religious fanaticism plays an important role |
