| Spanish abstract | El antropólogo Michael Taussig ha producido una gran cantidad de trabajo etnográfico sobre América Latina en el que toma por objeto la universalidad de la cultura burguesa y en el que, al reorientar la mirada del etnógrafo hacia los elementos embriagantes y orgiásticos de la vida, atenúa las líneas que dividen ciencia y arte. En este ensayo tengo la intención de mostrar lo siguiente: 1) que sus etnografías sobre magia, violencia y el Estado, están enraizadas en su priorización del mundo fenomenológico y en una concepción materialista en deuda con la teoría estética alemana del siglo XIX y con la antropología especulativa de Karl Marx y Walter Benjamin; 2) que su proyecto etnográfico no consiste en la eliminación de la ciencia del ámbito de la etnografía, sino en disminuir el papel de la explicación en favor de una forma de escritura que, como el arte, trabaja para refundar las imágenes del mundo |
| English abstract | During his career anthropologist Michael Taussig has produced a wealth of ethnographic work about Latin America that has taken aim at the universality of bourgeois culture by blurring the lines between art and science in the process of reorientating the ethnographer’s glance toward the intoxicating and orgiastic elements of life. In this essay I intend to show the following: 1) that his ethnographies of magic, violence and the State, are rooted in his prioritization of the phenomenal world and a materia - list conception of vision indebted to both 19 th Century German aesthetic theory and the speculative anthropology of Karl Marx and Walter Benja - min; and 2) that his ethnographic project is not aimed at eliminating science from the purview of ethnography, but rather at diminishing the role of explication in favor of a form of writing that, like art, works to recast the images of the world |
