| English abstract | The maxillofacial fractures are important because they change the whole facial height, width and especially the ability to breathe and due to these facts assume a prominent role in the care of patients with multiple traumas in general emergencies. Therefore, the mechanisms of trauma as well as the epidemiologic become valuable tools in dealing with these patients. This literature review was intended to delineate the epidemiology of facial injuries around the world from 11 studies analyzed. In the great majority of maxillofacial fractures affecting men ages 21 to 30 years and are the leading cause automobile accidents. | Portuguese abstract | As fraturas maxilofaciais são importantes por alterarem toda a altura facial, largura e principalmente a capacidade respiratória, sendo que assumem um papel de destaque nos atendimentos a pacientes politraumatizados nas emergências gerais. Portanto, os mecanismos de trauma bem como o perfil epidemiológico tornam-se ferramentas de grande valia na abordagem destes pacientes. Esta revisão da literatura teve a intenção de traçar o perfil epidemiológico dos traumatismos faciais em todo o mundo a partir de 11 trabalhos analisados. Em sua grande maioria, as fraturas maxilofaciais acometem homens de 21 a 30 anos e a principal causa são os acidentes automobilísticos.
