| English abstract | In this article I seek to understand how was the work of crews of ships which made the connection between Corumba, a city of the western border of Brazil, in Mato Grosso, and the port of Buenos Aires (Argentina), to Asuncion (Paraguay) and Montevideo (Uruguay). Opting for historical narrative, my intention is to present the uniqueness of the world maritime labor, highlighting the following aspects: the ethnic diversity present in the limited space of the ship, the interaction of employees with the hierarchy of command and obedience, the conflicts board and forms of solution, the extent that the laws of the land had in this world and finally, the pace of work dictated by the pace of the machine |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste artigo busco entender como se dava o trabalho dos tripulantes de navios que faziam a ligação entre Corumbá, cidade da fronteira oeste do Brasil, no estado do Mato Grosso, e o porto de Buenos Aires (Argentina), passando por Assunção (Paraguai) e Montevidéu (Uruguai). Optando pela narrativa histórica, minha pretensão é apresentar a singularidade do mundo do trabalho marítimo, destacando os seguintes aspectos: a diversidade étnica presente no espaço limitado do navio; a interação dos trabalhadores com a hierarquia de mando e obediência; os conflitos a bordo e as formas de solução; o alcance que as leis da terra tinham nesse mundo; por fim, o ritmo do trabalho ditado pelo ritmo da máquina |
