| English abstract | Anchored on the assumptions of cultural history, the present paper analyzes a type of printed protestant: the catechism. In order to analyze the materiality and show values distributed in print, we choose as the object of analysis catechisms, namely: Catechismo brief (1892), The brief catechism (1927) and Primer with prints (S/D). The theoretical approach is guided by Robert Darnton (1990), Roger Chartier (1998) e Carlo Ginzburg (1979) which discourse about the circulation of printed reading practices and the concept of cultural circularity, the protestant catechisms were used as teaching tools by american presbyterians in Brazil in the nineteenth century and functioned as an instrument of prescriptive inculcation of habits and values that should be externalized through attitudes and behaviors, demonstrating christian character |
| Portuguese abstract | Ancorado nos pressupostos da história cultural, o presente texto versa sobre um tipo de impresso protestante: o catecismo. Com vistas a analisar a materialidade e evidenciar os valores difundidos nos impressos, elegemos como objeto de análise os catecismos, a saber: Breve catechismo (1892), O breve catecismo (1927) e Cartilha com estampas (s.d.). O aporte teórico está pautado em Robert Darnton (1990), Roger Chartier (1998) e Carlo Ginzburg (1979), os quais discorrem acerca da circulação de impressos, das práticas de leitura e do conceito de circularidade cultural. Os catecismos protestantes foram utilizados como instrumentos pedagógicos pelos presbiterianos norte-americanos no Brasil dos oitocentos e funcionaram como um instrumento prescritivo de inculcação de hábitos e valores que deveriam ser externados através de atitudes e comportamentos, demonstrando o caráter cristão |
