| Spanish abstract | Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar históricamente la evolución inflacionaria en México, y examinar el efecto que la política monetaria y acciones extremas, como el Pacto de Solidaridad Económica, han tenido sobre el control de la inflación y el crecimiento económico del país. El interés de este ensayo es presentar conceptos críticos, y discutir si el objetivo único de la política monetaria mexicana debería ser normalizar los precios para mantener un ambiente social estable, aunque esto actúe en detrimento del crecimiento de la producción nacional y el empleo. A partir del análisis de los antecedentes y acciones tomadas durante el período total de estudio, de 1970 a la fecha y particularmente en los períodos de inflación galopante, se confirma la eficacia de la política monetaria restrictiva, la apertura comercial y la atracción de inversión extranjera en el control de la inflación en períodos críticos. Sin embargo, se cuestiona también la eficacia de la política monetaria como única forma de control de los precios, cuando la inflación está asociada a factores exógenos como la reciente pandemia de Covid-19 |
| English abstract | This work has as objective to analyze the historical evolution of the inflation in Mexico, and examine the effect that the monetary policy and extreme actions, such as the Pact of Economic Solidarity, have had on the control of the inflation and the national economic growth. The interest of this essay is to present critical concepts, and discuss if the unique objective of the Mexican economic policy should be to regularize the prices to maintain a stable social environment, although this policy damages the national production and the employment. Based on the analysis of the antecedents and actions taken during the whole period of analysis, from 1970 to date, and particularly during the periods of rampant inflation, the analysis confirms the efficacy of a restrictive monetary policy, the commercial opening, and the attraction of the foreign investment during critical periods. However, the analysis also questions the efficacy of the monetary policy, as the unique form of price control when the inflation is related to exogenous factors such as the recent pandemic of Covid-19 |
