Spanish abstract | A principios del siglo XIX, Londres se convirtió en el refugio de numerosos patriotas sudamericanos. Sin duda, Francisco de Miranda fue el más ilustre de todo ellos. Este artículo explora como el precursor venezolano procuró influir por diversos medios en la opinión pública británica, con el objetivo de ganar apoyos para la causa de la independencia de Hispanoamérica. Para ello, tuvo contactos al más alto nivel y se dedicó a la propaganda, con iniciativas como el periódico El Colombiano. A los gobernantes ingleses, sin embargo, no les interesaba tanto la causa de la libertad como debilitar al imperio español |
English abstract | In the early nineteenth century, London became the refuge of many American patriots. Undoubtedly, Francisco de Miranda was the most illustrious of them all. This paper explores how the Venezuelan precursor sought by various means to influence British public opinion, in order to gain support for the cause of independence in Latin America. To do this, he had contacts at the highest level and devoted to propaganda, with initiatives such as the newspaper El Colombiano. A British rulers, however, were not interested so much the cause of freedom as to weaken the Spanish Empire |
