| English abstract | The article revisits Machado de Assis through a politicai reading of Esaú e Jacó. Some interpretations (those relevant to the argument) are first summarized in order to show that the discussion of the role of History in Machado de Assis' fiction has not yet been exhausted. 1t is then a:rgued that Machado de Assis' understanding of History is linked to his literary program and that it is this 'V'kltanschauung which lends his fictional text its unity. It is the triad History-fiction-narrative which supports and lends unity to his text |
| Other abstract | Cet article a pour but de présenter une révision de l'oeuvre de Machado de Assis à travers une lecture politique d' Esaú e Jacó. I.:auteur développe son raisonnement sur deux plans. Sur un premier plan, il décrit en détail quelques interprétations seulement celles qui intéressent son raisonnement - dans le but de montrer que la discussion concernant la fonction de l'Histoire dans la fiction machadienrte n'est pas encore dose. Sur un se- cond plan, ii montre comment la vision que Machado avait de l'Histoire était associée à son programme littéraire et que c'est cette cosmovision qui donne au texte de fiction son unité. C'est la triade Histoire-fiction-narrative qui constitue le support du texte et lui donne son unité |
