| Spanish abstract | Este ensayo tiene de trasfondo la disputa contemporánea por los significados culturales -lo que otros han llamado la guerra cultural- en torno a dos temas de alta conflictividad: el aborto y el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. Tal contienda -crecientemente intensificada a un nivel global- en torno a la libertad reproductiva y las preferencias sexuales, toma lugar, hoy en día, en un contexto histórico muy particular de transición entre distintos modelos de acumulación y desarrollo capitalista -el moderno industrial y el posindustrial-, e interrogan a aspectos tan esenciales de la modernidad como son la definición de la persona, la noción de ciudadanía, las fronteras entre los privado y lo público, la relación entre la religión y el Estado, y el carácter mismo del proyecto nacional. En el presente ensayo me limito a identificar los alcances del problema bajo estudio, definir el contexto histórico-estructural en que dicha tensión se han agudizado, y ofrecer algunos elementos conceptuales que permitan comprender el tema a mayor profundidad |
| English abstract | The underlying theme of this essay deals with the contemporary dispute for cultural meanings, or what others have called the culture war, over abortion and gay marriage. This growing global confrontation around reproductive choice and sexual preferences takes place within the historical-structural context of the transition between two models of capitalist accumulation and development. The shift from industrial modernity to postindustrial times has interrogated such elemental aspects of modernity as: the definition of personhood; the notion of citizenship; the limits between public and private; the relationship between church and state; and the nature of the national project. In this article I propose to identify the complexity of the theme, define the actual historical and structural context in which the dispute has intensified, and put forward a conceptual framework that allows a deeper understanding of the issue |
