| Spanish abstract | Se analiza el origen del culto a la Virgen del Valle en el estado insular Nueva Esparta (Venezuela) y su relación con las creencias autóctonas de los indígenas guaiqueríes, por un lado, y la creencia católica clásica en la Virgen María, por el otro. Luego de describir la religiosidad de los guaiqueríes en la época prehispánica y presentar las características de la creencia en la Virgen María en la España medieval, se argumenta que el culto a la Virgen se inició en Venezuela en el período colonial, cuando algunos guaiqueríes la aceptaron debido a su semejanza con los cemíes y el carácter matriarcal de su sociedad, para luego, en el período republicano, adherirse masiva y definitivamente a la Virgen, incorporándola a su panteón de divinidades a partir de un suceso histórico insólito. Ellos rendían culto a la Virgen a su modo ancestral, por lo cual esta creencia no puede ser considerada como sincrética. Se concluye que en las islas neoespartanas, aunque con el nombre de una Virgen católica, el culto a la Virgen del Valle representa una creencia autóctona guaiquerí que persiste a través del tiempo, desplegando aspectos católicos solo en los rituales formales de la iglesia |
| English abstract | The article analyzes the origin of the cult of the Virgin del Valle in the island state of Nueva Esparta (Venezuela) and its relationship with indigenous beliefs of the guaiqueries on the one hand, and with the classic Catholic belief in the Virgin Mary on the other. After describing the religiosity of the guaiqueríes in ancient times and presening the characteristics of the belief in Virgin Mary in medieval Spain, it is argued that the cult of the Virgin began in Venezuela in the colonial times when some guaiqueríes accepted it because of their similarity to cemíes and the matriarchal character of their society, and later in the Republican period they definitely and massively adhered to the Virgin, incorporating her into their pantheon of deities after an unusual historical event. They worshiped the Virgin in their ancestral way, so this belief can not be considered as syncretic. It is concluded that on the islands of Nueva Esparta State, although under the name of a Catholic Virgin, the cult of the Virgin del Valle represents an authentic indigenous belief that it persists through time, displaying Catholics aspects only in formal rituals of the church |
