| Spanish abstract | La práctica del coleccionismo de la naturaleza en Nueva España se hizo del conocimiento público en 1790, después de que la Gaceta de México publicara una noticia sobre la apertura del gabinete de historia natural del expedicionario español José Longinos Martínez. El hecho se derivó colateralmente de la confluencia de dos factores: la Instrucción Circular, que en 1776 se envió desde Madrid a las provincias y colonias de España para solicitar producciones naturales que incrementaran las colecciones del Real Gabinete de Historia Natural y la Expedición Botánica, que en 1787 llegó a Nueva España para ejecutar las indicaciones de dicha instrucción. Los paradigmas implícitos en ambos sucesos fueron factores que influyeron e impulsaron el coleccionismo de la naturaleza novohispana. La apropiación y el ejercicio local de esa práctica se reflejaron materialmente en los procesos que los expedicionarios utilizaron para conformar las colecciones coloniales de naturaleza enviadas a Madrid |
| English abstract | In New Spain, the practice of collecting natural species was made public in 1790 after the publication of an article in the journal Gaceta de México about the inauguration of the Natural History Cabinet owned by the Spanish explorer, José Longinos Martínez. The creation of the Cabinet was the result of two factors: the Circular Instruction sent from Madrid to the colonies and provinces of New Spain in 1776, ordering the search for natural species to improve the collections of the Royal Cabinet of Natural History; along with the arrival of the Botanical Expedition to New Spain to execute the orders of the royal warrant expedited in 1787. The paradigms implicit in both events triggered the collecting of natural species throughout New Spain. The appropriation of the local species is reflected materially in the collections that the expeditionaries hoarded in New Spain and then sent to Madrid |
