| Spanish abstract | Este trabajo pretende identificar los imaginarios que configuran la representación de la Araucanía en el relato de viaje de Eduard Poeppig (1835), así como la elaboración simbólica que sustenta dichos imaginarios. A través del análisis de la obra de este naturalista alemán, se explican dinámicas y estructuras de la sociedad y cultura occidental de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. De esta forma, se demostrará que la metodología europea para comprender el territorio del sur de América en esta época, fundamentada en una epistemología que funde aspectos científicos con aspectos literarios, es aplicada por Eduard Poeppig en su ejercicio exploratorio de la Araucanía y en la expresión de sus observaciones |
| English abstract | This paper intends to identify the imaginary that constitutes the representation of the Araucanía within the travel story of Eduard Poeppig (1835), as well as the symbolic elaboration that supports these imaginaries. Through the analysis of the work of this German naturalist, we explain dynamics and structures of Western society and culture of the first half of the nineteenth century. In this way, it will be shown that the European methodology for understanding the territory of South America in that period, based on an epistemology that fuses scientific with literary aspects, is applied by Eduard Poeppig in his exploratory exercise in the Araucanía and in the way he expresses his observations |
