| Spanish abstract | La discusión acerca de la pertinencia de la intervención estatal en el mercado ha sido reiterativa en la historia del pensamiento económico. El turismo es otro ejemplo de que la regulación es no sólo necesaria sino fundamental, para corregir las asimetrías de un mercado que está lejos de cumplir los supuestos que motivaron la teoría del interés individual y del beneficio social como resultado. El presente trabajo intenta enfatizar en las implicaciones de ignorar el papel del Estado en la construcción del desarrollo sostenible, haciendo especial énfasis en el turismo en el Caribe insular. |
| English abstract | The discussion about the relevance of state intervention in the market has been recurring in the history of economic thought. But tourism is another example that regulation is not only necessary, but fundamental to correct the asymmetries of a market that is far from fulfilling the assumptions that motivated the theory of individual interest leading to social benefits. The present work tries to emphasize the implications of ignoring the role of the state in building sustainable development, with special emphasis on tourism in the insular Caribbean. |
| Other abstract | La discussion sur la pertinence de l´intervention étatique sur le marché est réitérative dans l´histoire de la pensée économique. Le tourisme est encoré un exemple que la régulation n´est pas seulement nécessaire mais fondamentale, pour corriger les asymétries d´un marché qui est loin de satisfaire les hypothèses qui ont motivé la théorie de l´intérêt individuel et du bienêtre social comme son résultat. Le travail essaie de souligner les implications d´ignorer le rôle de l´État dans la construction du développement soutenable, en mettant l´accent plus particulièrement sur le tourisme dans les Caraïbes insulaires. |
