| English abstract | At EN III, Aristotle presents some elements for his action theory. Action always admits of contraries, and is, therefore, undetermined; and is voluntary if the moving principle is in the agent and the circumstances are well known. Not every voluntary action is result of prior deliberation, though, as is the case when one acts by impulse, passionately; even so, every deliberate choice is voluntary. But at which point is the agent morally responsible? Is voluntariness enough to characterize the agent as responsible for his/her actions or is it necessary that a previous deliberate choice was taken? This research intends to answer these questions and specify the relationship between action theory and virtue. To achieve these aims, the importance of adequate education of desires in building up a virtuous character is investigated. Moral responsibility, as Aristotle perceives it, seems to be better identified with deliberate choice, since the agent's disposition of character is characterized by choosing a course of action, even though voluntariness is related, in a certain way, to moral responsibility |
| Portuguese abstract | Em EN III, Aristóteles apresenta os elementos que compõem uma teoria da ação. A ação é sempre aberta aos contrários sendo, portanto, indeterminada, e será voluntária se o princípio motor estiver no agente e as circunstâncias forem conhecidas. Entretanto, nem toda ação voluntária é deliberada, como nos casos em que se age por ímpeto, de modo passional; no entanto, toda escolha deliberada é voluntária. Mas onde se situa, propriamente, a responsabilidade moral? Basta a voluntariedade da ação ou é necessário que haja deliberação e escolha? Esta pesquisa busca entender tais questões e a relação que há entre a teoria da ação e a virtude. Para tanto, investiga-se a importância da educação correta dos desejos na construção de um caráter virtuoso. A responsabilidade moral, em Aristóteles, parece ser identificada mais plenamente quando há escolha deliberada por parte do agente pois é na escolha que se percebe mais claramente a disposição de caráter, ainda que a voluntariedade da ação já carregue, de certo modo, a responsabilidade moral |
