| English abstract | The episode Clueless, from the 2nd season of the series House M.D. (2004-2012), is examined in order to identify critical thinking elements to which the audience may have been exposed during the reception. Although the mere exposure does not guarantee learning, the product audiovisual composition may have facilitated the apprehension of the argumentative way that are used by the characters. In view of the correct diagnosis, the characters engage in rounds of debate, i.e., in a succession of arguments and counter-arguments, conjectures, fallacies and refutations. The episode has features that are designed to hold the viewer’s attention even in debates that are inscrutable due to medical jargon. The research is based on the concept of critical thinking as used by Robert H. Ennis, and it is also founded on the cognitive psychology concerning problem solving and insight, and, in relation to television studies, the analytical methodology proposed by Jeremy Butler, as well as his use of the concept of hailing, and in Kristin Thompson about the classical narrative in television fiction |
| Portuguese abstract | Exame do episódio “Clueless”, da 2.ª temporada da série Dr. House (2004-2012), com o objetivo de identificar elementos de critical thinking a que espectadores possam ter sido expostos durante a sua recepção. Ainda que a simples exposição não garanta o aprendizado, a composição audiovisual do produto pode ter facilitado a apreensão da forma argumentativa de que fazem uso os personagens. Em vista do diagnóstico correto, estes se envolvem em rodadas de debate, ou seja, numa sucessão de argumentos e contra-argumentos, conjeturas, falácias e refutações. O episódio possui características que têm por objetivo prender a atenção dos espectadores mesmo em debates herméticos devido ao jargão médico. A pesquisa tem por base a concepção de critical thinking de Robert H. Ennis, fundamentando-se também na psicologia cognitiva quanto a problem solving e insight e, em relação aos estudos de televisão, na metodologia analítica proposta por Jeremy Butler, assim como em sua utilização do conceito de hailing, e em Kristin Thompson quanto à noção de narrativa clássica na ficção televisiva |
