| Spanish abstract | Se investigó acerca del uso y la sostenibilidad de los recursos pesqueros de la pesca artesanal (pa) en México. El objetivo fue conocer su estatus y su contribución a la seguridad alimentaria. Se llevaron a cabo una revisión documental y un análisis de la Carta Nacional Pesquera (cnp). La pa se identificó por el uso de embarcaciones <10.5 m eslora. Se reconocieron 66 pesquerías de peces e invertebrados, 65.2% en el Pacífico y 34.8% en el Golfo de México. La cnp se actualizó cada 3.6 años entre 2000 y 2018. De las pesquerías, 30% se actualizó en tres ocasiones y 21% en dos; en promedio, 46% registró estatus al máximo sustentable. La captura del mayor número de ea (especies asociadas) ocurrió en pesquerías de peces y se asoció al uso de redes de pesca de baja selectividad. El menor número de ea fue en invertebrados, se asoció a pesca por buceo. El acceso a la pa es por medio de permisos por especie, por grupo de peces y para escama en general. El 48.8%de la producción de la pa (≈287 153 t/año), está disponible para consumo humano directo, el resto va al mercado global. Acciones para alcanzar la sustentabilidad en la pa son: mejorar la selectividad con mayores adecuaciones técnicas en redes para captura de peces y definir dónde, cómo y cuándo operarlas en un contexto de regionalización y/o estableciendo umbrales de incidentalidad de ea; así como generar conocimiento de la disponibilidad, el acceso y la utilización de la producción pesquera del resto de los componentes de la pesca para saber con certeza su aportación a la seguridad alimentaria |
| English abstract | The use and sustainability of the fishing resources of artisanal fisheries (pa) in Mexico were investigated. The objective was to know their status and contribution to food security. A documentary review, an analysis of the National Fisheries Charter (cnp) and own observations were carried out. The pa was identified by the use of vessels <10.5 m length. Sixty-six fish and invertebrate fisheries were recognized, 65.2% in the Pacific and 34.8% in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. The cnp was updated every 3.6 years between 2000 and 2018. Thirty percent of the fisheries were updated three times and 21% twice; 46% of the pa registered maximum sustainable status. The capture of the largest number of associated species (ea) occurred in finfish fisheries and was associated with the use of low selectivity fishing nets. The lowest number of ea was in invertebrate’s fisheries, it was associated with diving fishing. Access to the pa is through permits by species, by group of fish and for a general fish permit. The general fish permit predominates. Forty-nine percent of the pa production (≈ 287 152 t/year) is available for direct human consumption, the rest goes to the global market. Actions to achieve sustainability in the pa are: improve selectivity with technical adaptations in nets to capture fish, and define where, how and when to operate them, in a context of regionalization and/or establishing thresholds for ea bycatch; and generate knowledge of the availability, access and utilization at the time of the production of the rest of the components of the fish to know its total contribution to food security in Mexico |
