| Spanish abstract | Se describe el empleo medicinal de las cactáceas y suculentas en una dimensión histórica que inicia con los mexicas y continúa a través de los siglos hasta la época actual. Se ha difundido su utilidad para apoyar la salud y contribuir a la curación de numerosas enfermedades, sin una base científica. Se investigaron y transcriben los textos de indígenas y de cronistas novohispanos, incluyendo la descripción de las plantas y sus usos medicinales. La interpretación de los cronistas en relación con el pensamiento indígena es ambigua por la diferente noción de la enfermedad y la clasificación de los remedios. A la fecha no ha sido posible identificar las plantas a partir de las ilustraciones y de las descripciones. Durante las últimas décadas se ha reforzado la fitoterapia mediante investigaciones farmacológicas, sin poder comprobar los efectos terapéuticos sobre la diabetes, la obesidad y otras enfermedades. También se investigan los efectos de los componentes bioquímicos de los vegetales, es relevante el caso de la industrialización de hormonas a partir de dioscoreáceas. El surgimiento de la nutracéutica abre posibilidades de su empleo como complemento de la alimentación que promueve la salud. Se derivan algunas conclusiones con respecto a las enfermedades prevalecientes durante la colonia y se comenta su poca utilidad como panacea. Deben profundizarse las investigaciones, ya que las cactáceas y suculentas han acompañado a la humanidad desde tiempos ancestrales y se requiere protegerlas |
| English abstract | The authors describe the medicinal use of the cactaceae and succulent plants in a historical dimension that starts with Mexican indigenous people and continues through the centuries until the present. It has been thought of that among the uses of these species are health benefits that contribute to the healing of many diseases, however there seems to be no clear scientific basis for how the species act on many of these diseases. We present a summary of the chronicles of indigenous and novohispanic origin, including the description of the plants and their medicinal uses. The interpretation of the chroniclers of the indigenous thinking is ambiguous by the different notion of disease and classification of the remedies. To date, the taxonomy of plants has rarely been possible from the illustrations and descriptions so current interpretation is difficult. In recent decades phytotherapy has been strengthened by the advent of pharmacological research, without proving the therapeutical effects on diabetes, obesity or other diseases. The action of the biochemical components, especially in the hormone industry has been relevant. The emergence of the nutraceutics opens the possibilities of their use as a nutritional complement to promote health. We derive some conclusions regarding the prevalence of disease during the colonial period and the little utility of plants once thought of as a panacea. It is necessary to continue research, since cacti and succulents have accompanied mankind since ancient times and require protection |
