English abstract The Cretaceous period is broadly represented in Sonora, and therefore is the best known geologic period from the stratigraphic point of view. In this work we made a compilation of the stratigraphy of Cretaceous rocks and we present some hypotheses and questions about the paleogeographic and tectonic evolution during this period. The first known description of Cretaceous units in the whole region, and particularly in northeastern Sonora, was made by the outstanding Mexican geologist don José Guadalupe Aguilera, at the end of the XIX century. This remarkable geologist mapped a set of fossiliferous limestones south and west of Agua Prieta, and correlated it with the Comanche Group of Texas. The stratigraphic sequence he described belongs to the Mural Formation of the Lower Cretaceous Bisbee Group. The Bisbee Group deposited in the northwest corner of the same Bisbee basin, which was about 300 km wide and 400 km long. In the southeastern corner of Arizona and the southwestern corner of New Mexico, the Bisbee Group, that fills the depocenter of the Bisbee basin, shows a stratigraphy with two key elements: (1) a basal conglomerate, clearly diachronic, the Glance Conglomerate of Arizona and Sonora, and (2) a marine interval of Aptian-Albian limestone (Mural Formation) interbedded with clastic, nonmarine to transitional strata
