| Spanish abstract | En la minuta de los libros que embarcó en Cádiz el obispo Torrijos con destino a su obispado de Mérida en 1792, aparece un buen número de obras de medicina —tomando en consideración no el total de los diversos libros contenidos en el documento, sino el estado de atraso en que se encontraba esta ciencia en España para el siglo XVIII—. En su mayor parte eran obras muy recientes, que reflejaban en sus contenidos los últimos adelantos de la ciencia médica, aun cuando no faltaban ejemplares de siglos anteriores referidos a las enseñanzas de la medicina griega y árabe, cuyos postulados seguían vigentes en la citada centuria. Pensamos que la finalidad de adquirir tan preciados volúmenes no era otra que la de crear una cátedra de medicina, tal vez en el Colegio Seminario fundado por Juan Ramos de Lora o elevando éste a la categoría de universidad, idea truncada por su temprana muerte pero realizada pocos años más tarde por sus sucesores |
| English abstract | On the list of books that Bishop Manuel Cándido Torrijos shipped from Cádiz to his bishopric in Mérida in 1792, there is a number of medicine textbooks that we could consider significant —if we take into consideration not the total number of medicine books within the variety on the list, but the neglect of this field in XVIII century— Spain. For the most part, they were recent books that reflected in their contents the latest discoveries of medical science even though volumes from previous centuries, referring to the teachings of Greek and Arabic medicine whose propositions were still valid in the above mentioned century, did not lack. We believe that the aim of acquiring such precious volumes was no other than to create a school of medicine, perhaps within the seminary founded by Juan Ramos de Lora, elevating it to the category of university. This idea was truncated by his early passing but realized few years later by his successors |
