| Spanish abstract | La protección a los monumentos arqueológicos, artísticos e históricos data del siglo xix; sin embargo, es con la Ley sobre Conservación de Monumentos Históricos y Artísticos y Bellezas Naturales (1914) y la Ley sobre Conservación de Monumentos, Edificios, Templos y Objetos Históricos o Artísticos (1916), cuando el Estado mexicano formalizó la protección del patrimonio cultural mueble e inmueble y lo consideró parte de la cultura universal. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar una breve historia de la Inspección General de Monumentos Artísticos y Bellezas Naturales, institución que antecedió al actual Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, fundado en 1939 por mandato del presidente Lázaro Cárdenas del Río. En el marco de la celebración de los 80 años de dicha fundación, nos hemos propuesto relatar buena parte de la historia de la Inspección General con base en fuentes documentales y gráficas encontradas en diversos archivos, así como en hemerografía de la época |
| English abstract | The protection of archaeological, artistic and historical monuments dates from the 19th century; however, is in 1914, with the Law on Conservation of Historical and Artistic Monuments and Natural Beauties and in 1916 with the Law on Conser-vation of Monuments, Buildings, Temples and Historical or Artistic Objects, when the Mexican State formalized the pro-tection of cultural heritage furniture and the goberment considered it as part of universal culture. The objective of this article is to present a brief history of the General Inspection of Artistic Monuments and Natural Beauties, Institution that preceded the current National Institute of Anthropology and History (inah) founded in 1939 by mandate of President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.
