English abstract | Gomphotheric mastodons are an extinct family of Proboscidea which appeared in South America approximately one million years ago during the Great American Biotic Interchange. At this time only two genera have been documented: Cuvieronius and Stegomastodon, known in Venezuela as Cuvieronius hyodon and Stegomastodon waringi. This paper gives information on the Gomphotheriidae fossil record in Venezuela based on historical data and on specimens which form part of various collections in this country. The information requested from these collections indicates a wide distribution of Gomphotheres during the Quaternary period, from mountainous areas with cold to temperate climates, to the plains and in coastal zones, with warm damp climates incrementing paleobiogeographical distribution of this group of extinct mammals |
