| Spanish abstract | A lo largo del primer cuarto del siglo XX las exhibiciones cinematográficas se convirtieron en una de las actividades recreativas más exitosas en La Habana. Las primeras salas capitalinas nacieron como resultado de la readecuación de locales existentes, en particular de viviendas, a la par del surgimiento de los primeros cines concebidos expresamente con esa finalidad, que, en general, no diferían en apariencia y organización de los viejos teatros. En el presente trabajo se reconstruye y se caracteriza el inicio de esa función a partir del análisis de un total de setenta y siete salas, que en su mayoría no han llegado al presente, de las que se pudo encontrar información de cuarenta y cinco de ellas en fuentes primarias |
| English abstract | During the first quarter of the twentieth century, cinema-going became one of the most popular leisure activities for the inhabitants of Havana. Initially films were projected in specially adapted pre-existing spaces, houses in particular, while the fist purposebuilt cinemas also began to appear. In general, the latter did not differ from the old theatres in terms of appearance and space organization. This article traces the beginnings of this new architectural function, through an analysis of seventyseven cinema theatres of Havana, most of which have survived to this day. It has been possible to unearth information on forty-five of these buildings through research in primary sources |
