| Spanish abstract | En 1818 dos franceses, Esteban Best y Julio Sagebien, construyen en Matanzas la primera obra neoclásica de gran envergadura de Cuba: la Aduana. Se daba inicio a una nueva era arquitectónica bajo la influencia del neoclasicismo. Best se retira pero Sagebien protagonizó el quehacer constructivo de la ciudad en la primera mitad del siglo XIX y además fue el constructor de importantes edificaciones de La Habana como el palacio de Aldama y los almacenes de San José. Su labor en los ferrocarriles fue también muy notable. Pese a tan relevantes aportes, su labor es poco conocida. Este artículo pretende subsanar esa inmerecida omisión |
| English abstract | In 1818 two French architects, Esteban Best and Julio Sagebien, built in Matanzas the first outstanding neo-classicist building of Cuba: custom houses. It was the beginning of a new architectural era under the influence of the neoclassicism. Best retired but Sagebien started to build most of the city in the first half of the XIX century. He also built important constructions in Havana like the Aldama Palace and San José's warehouses. Besides, he made a very remarkable work in the railroads. In spite of his excellent contributions to architecture, his work is not very well-known. The purpose of this article is to highlight his remarkable work, to correct that undeserved exclusion |
