| Spanish abstract | En la Conquista de México se confrontaron dos tradiciones militares con armas diferentes. En cuanto a los escudos, los guerreros indígenas me-soamericanos llevaban rodelas emplu-madas llamadas chimalli, mientras que los soldados hispanos tenían adargas de piel. En este artículo examinamos dos escudos que resaltan por su belleza y el simbolismo de su mosaico plumario: el chimalli mexica del Cánido emplumado y una adarga que se hizo para Felipe II por plumajeros en la Nueva España, y engalanada con un complejo programa iconográfico. Discutimos que estos dos “objetos votivos” pertenecen al ámbito de la protección divina |
| English abstract | In the Conquest of Mexico, two military traditions confronted each other with different weapons. In terms of shields, indigenous Mesoamerican war-riors carried feathered bucklers called chimalli, while Hispanic soldiers had adargas made of leather. In this article we examine two shields that stand out for their beauty and the symbolism of their feather mosaic: the Mexica Feath-ered Canine Chimalli in Vienna and an adarga made for Philip II, adorned by featherworkers in New Spain with a complex iconographic program.
