| Spanish abstract | El Manicomio General La Castañeda, fundado en 1910 a las afueras de la ciudad de México, fue la institución psiquiátrica más importante del país en el siglo XX. Cuando se inauguró, las familias internaron a hombres y mujeres que reunían los requisitos para ser considerados como locos y merecedores de tratamiento psiquiátrico. En este artículo se exploran las bases culturales del encierro terapéutico a través de los imaginarios que la sociedad mexicana de aquellos días tenía sobre locura, sus causas, síntomas y tratamientos. Se analizan las dos caras de la locura: el degenerado y el nervioso; referentes que sintetizaban términos psiquiátricos y variables sociales como la clase y el género |
| English abstract | The Manicomio General La Castañeda founded in 1910 at the outside of Mexico City, was the most important psychiatric institution of the XXth century in Mexico. When it was open, the families let there men and women whom had the requirement for being considered madness and in consequences, they where appropriate for having psychiatric treatment. In this article I explore the cultural bases of the therapeutic confnement through the imaginaries that the Mexican society of those days had about madness, its causes, symptoms and treatments. It analyzes both faces of madness: the one of the degenerate and the other of the nervous. Both references synthesize psychiatric terms and social variables as class and gender |
