| Spanish abstract | Este artículo presenta una visión general de las orientaciones predominantes, en las investigaciones sobre la Ciudad de México, en las que se observan serios problemas de fragmentación al hacer poco énfasis en el funcionamiento de la ciudad, como totalidad. Para el autor es necesario que se conciba al Distrito Federal como una parte de la ciudad real constituida por la Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México. De lo anterior, surge la necesidad de abordar los temas de investigación en escala metropolitana o, al menos, de insertar los estudios fragmentarios en este "contexto", más general. | English abstract | This paper presents a general outlook on the mainstream orientations that prevail nowadays in Mexico City studies. These orientations fail to recognize the functioning of the city as a totality, operating on the basis of a serious fragmentation of the object under study. The author holds that the Distrito Federal is only a part of a real city, formed by the metropolitan zone of the Valle de México. Because of this, it is necessary to develop these kinds of studies in a metropolitan scale or, at least, putting these fragmentary studies in a general context.
