| Spanish abstract | En el año 2016 se reportaron 104,500 muertes en todo el mundo por el virus de influenza, siendo los adultos más vulnerables los mayores de 65 años, hospitalizados, inmunocomprometidos, embarazadas y con enfermedades crónicas. Se ha observado que los enfermos oncológicos, específicamente aquéllos con cáncer de pulmón y neoplasias hematológicas, tienen mayor riesgo de muerte por dicha infección. La vacunación contra la influenza se considera una herramienta importante para la prevención de esta infección en personas con enfermedades crónicas; disminuye hasta 50-60% el riesgo de contraer el virus. Es esencial que los médicos estimulen a esta población a vacunarse anualmente, ya que se ha descrito que dicha estrategia únicamente se aplica en 5.3% de los pacientes oncológicos, quienes tienen mayor necesidad de protección y al mismo tiempo menor respuesta inmunitaria a la vacuna |
| English abstract | Globally in 2016, nearly one hundred and five thousand deaths were reported because of the influenza virus. The elderly and those with comorbidities were the most affected population. Oncologic patients, specifically those with lung cancer and hematologic neoplasms have a greater risk of death related to the infection of the virus. Immunization against influenza virus is considered an important tool in those with chronic conditions including patients with immunosuppression where it can reduce the risk of illness caused by influenza virus infection by 50- to 60 %. Due to the above it is important that the physicians encourage this population to receive annual influenza vaccination. However, this strategy is only applied in 5.3% of the oncologic patients who indeed have the major need to be protected but at the same time a lower immune response to the vaccine |
